Peru President: "Fighting anemia is a national priority"

14:41 | Lima, Jun. 11.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday said that fighting childhood anemia constitutes a national priority, noting the target is to reduce it from 43% to 19% over the next three years.

Speaking at the second season launch of a TV show called "Cocina con Causa" (Cook with a purpose), the Head of State called for joint efforts to eradicate this condition.

According to the Peruvian leader, different cases show that anemia can be effectively treated.

"We are in (Lima's peripheral district of) Ventanilla, which is a great example that we can fight anemia if efforts are united and we work together towards that end. Fighting it is a national priority," he remarked.

"Our Government has several top priorities, but the most important one is the fight against anemia and malnutrition in children," he added.

To do so, the central government must work with regional and municipal governments. Plus, it needs a shared commitment with the community and children's homes.

The aim —he noted— is to reduce anemia from 43% to 19% within the next three years.

This way, "we would be fulfilling the State and Government's role, giving priority to children."

During the launch event, Peru's top official was accompanied by his wife Maribel Diaz.

"Cocina con Causa" (Cook with a purpose) is a multi-sector initiative that promotes the use of nutritious products on tables across the country.
