Peru Gov't passes emergency decree to secure parliamentary elections

08:00 | Lima, Oct. 10.

The Council of Ministers —led by Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra— has approved an emergency decree to establish urgent and exceptional measures that enable electoral system organizations to guarantee the holding of parliamentary elections on January 26, 2020.

Therefore, electoral bodies will be able to issue rules, regulations, and other provisions needed to conduct said elections.

Likewise, the document includes regulations that enable electoral organizations to get the required financing.

On October 1st, by means of a supreme decree, the Executive Branch called new parliamentary elections for January 26, 2020

The document also confirmed the dissolution of Congress, which failed to deliver a vote of confidence in two Cabinets of the same Government (2016-2021).

The supreme decree was signed by President Vizcarra and Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos.
