Peru: Gov't is willing to work on Chumbivilcas' requests

10:59 | Chumbivilcas (Cusco region), Mar. 29.

Development and Social Inclusion Minister Paola Bustamante has affirmed the Peruvian Government is completely willing to work on Chumbivilcas Province authorities' demands, concerning the mining passage so populations can have peace of mind.

"Let's regard this passage as an opportunity and not as a problem, an opportunity for development," the official told Andina news Agency.

During the recent meeting, the authorities and population mentioned topics such as access to basic services, education, health, transport, water, and sanitation.

In regards to the request to consider Chumbivilcas Province within Las Bambas mining project's direct environmental and social influence area, this matter will be addressed on the audience set to take place in Lima on April 9.

In this sense, if the request is approved, then the community will receive greater resources.

"The meeting has been positive. We highly value this willingness for dialogue aimed at the development of Chumbivilcas and the development of the country," Minister Bustamante expressed.

With regard to the resumption of dialogue with Fuerabamba community, the official indicated the Executive is willing to do so.

However, the population informed they would only talk if their leader Gregorio Rojas is released, a decision —she said— depends merely on the Judicial Branch.

Ministers Zulema Tomas (Health), Paola Bustamante (Development-Social Inclusion), and Edmer Trujillo (Transport-Communications) took part in the gathering.

The issue

As is known, members of the Fuerabamba community blocked a roadway corridor in Cusco region that is used by Las Bambas to transport its copper production to Matarani Port.

It should be noted only the mining company's vehicles are forbidden to transit. Fuerabamba community demands Las Bambas to pay compensation for the use of the lands.

On Thursday, Minister Trujillo ratified the Government's willingness to continue paying for the lands that comprise the Inca country's road infrastructure, referring to the road that passes through the Yavi Yavi estate.
