Peru: Gov't commission meets with local authorities, leaders to solve mining conflict

15:58 | Chumbivilcas (Cusco region), Mar. 28.

A high-level Commission of the Executive Branch on Thursday met with local authorities and community leaders to solve the social conflict around Peru's Las Bambas mining project.

The meeting took place in Santo Tomas district belonging to Chumbivilcas province in southern Cusco region.

Also attending were Chumbivilcas Mayor Marcos Ibarra, and Cusco Governor Jean Paul Benavente, among others.

The Executive Branch proposed to meet with Chumbivilcas authorities on April 9 in Lima in a bid to discuss and solve the above-mentioned conflict.

As is known, members of the Fuerabamba community have blocked a roadway corridor in Cusco region that is used by Las Bambas to transport its copper production to Matarani Port.

It should be noted only the mining company's vehicles are forbidden to transit. Fuerabamba community demands Las Bambas to pay compensation for the use of the lands.

Earlier today, Minister Trujillo ratified the Government's willingness to continue paying for the lands that comprise the Inca country's road infrastructure, referring to the road that passes through the Yavi Yavi estate.
