Peru: Gold exports up 8.3% in Jan 2020

10:39 | Lima, Mar. 11.

Peruvian gold shipments totaled US$781 million last January, an amount 8.3% higher than that recorded in the same month of 2019, the privately-run National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) has reported.

"Exports of this precious metal were favored by the increase in the price of gold by approximately 21.1%, despite having registered a lower volume (-10.6%)," the business guild said.

It also indicated that the main destination markets for gold shipments are Canada (30%), Switzerland (26%), and India (19%).

Copper

For their part, copper exports totaled $1.005 billion last January —a smaller amount (7.5%) if compared to the similar month in 2019.

SNMPE indicated that copper shipments represented 26% of Peru's total exports, which amounted to US$3.895 billion in January 2020.

It also said that copper shipments accounted for 45% of mining exports amounting to US$2.222 billion in the first month of 2020.

The business guild explained that the decrease in exports of the red metal —registered during the first month of the year— was due to lower volume of shipments of this metal (12.2%) over the same month in 2019 —and not for a price factor.

The main destination markets for copper exports were China (67%), South Korea (11%), and Japan (4%).

Total exports

Finally, the SNMPE announced that mining shipments reached US$2.222 billion in January 2020 —a 0.6% increase compared to the same month in 2019.

In the first month of this year, mining exports accounted for 57% of Peru's total sales abroad, which amounted to US$3.895 billion.
