GDP growth rates of 11 Peruvian regions were higher than the national average (1.2%) during the second quarter of 2019.
Said figures were mainly underpinned by the increase in mining extraction and hydrocarbons exploitation.
Likewise, Puno (3.7%), Amazonas (2.9%), Piura (2.8%), Lambayeque (1.5%), and Lima (1.4%) regions posted positive results, driven by the trade, transport, and telecommunications sectors.
Said regions contributed 1.9% to the economy's development and 68.9% to the country's production.
However, production decreased in nine regions, which had a negative effect of 0.75 percentage points.
This is the case of Madre de Dios (-8.1%), Apurimac (-7.5%), Ancash (-6.9%), Cusco (-3.2%), Arequipa (-1.6%), and Junin (-1%) regions, due to lower
mining activity.
Eastern Area
Furthermore, the eastern area's GDP increased 2.8%, underpinned by construction (6.8%) and farming (4%) sectors. However, the mining and hydrocarbons sector decreased 0.6%.
Northern Area
Production in the northern area rose 2% thanks to the
construction (13.8%), telecommunications (7.5%), and farming (3%) sectors.
Central area
The central area's economic activity grew 0.9%, driven by the construction (6.1%) and trade (3.2%) sectors, while manufacturing dropped 8%.
Southern area
Finally, production in the southern area increased 0.8% due to the construction (6.7%) and
farming (2.5%) sectors. However, this rise was mitigated by a 3.1% decline in the mining and hydrocarbons sector.
