Peru: Fujimori seeks international election audit

16:09 | Lima, Jun. 28.

Fuerza Popular presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori on Monday delivered a letter to Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti asking him to seek an international audit of the runoff election held on June 6.

According to Fujimori, an international audit will review the voter rolls, election records, electoral lists, and the computer system used in this electoral process, among other things.

In her view, an inspection of this nature will determine whether the results processed and counted by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reflect the popular will.

"It is worth noting that I make this request due to the large number of irregularities that have been reported by citizens, media outlets, social media, which we have submitted to electoral bodies," the candidate explained.

On the other hand, Fujimori expressed concern over Luis Arce who declined to continue serving as member of the plenary session of the National Election Board (JNE), noting that the electoral system must ensure "the authentic, free, and spontaneous expression of citizens."

The Fuerza Popular candidate indicated that President Sagasti would not violate the principles of neutrality by accepting this request and insisted on the existence of irregularities in this runoff election.

"We hope that an audit will clarify each of these complaints and will confirm whether the figures provided by the ONPE are an accurate reflection of the June 6 election result (…). We seek to know the truth," she concluded.
