Peru: Fujimori remains hospitalized due to cardiac arrhythmia

12:29 | Lima, Aug. 7.

Peru's former and pardoned President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) remains hospitalized at Lima-based Centenario Clinic due to a cardiac arrhythmia, his personal doctor Alejandro Aguinaga informed.

According to the physician, Fujimori woke up abruptly last Sunday feeling a shortness of breath. Thus, he was transferred to the medical center.

At the healthcare center, the 80-year-old was evaluated by cardiologists more than once. His health condition improved by Tuesday morning.

His son —suspended Congressman Kenji Fujimori— arrived at the clinic on Monday night to visit him. According to media outlets, the eldest son, Hiro, also visited him yesterday.

As is known, Fujimori was granted a humanitarian pardon by ex-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on December 24, 2017. He had served 12 years of the 25-year sentence for the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases, which involved human rights abuses.

On Monday, the Judicial Branch admitted the request submitted by La Cantuta and Barrios Altos victims' relatives to review the humanitarian pardon, in accordance with the resolution by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights

Last June, the Court ruled that the Peruvian State shall —constitutionally— review the pardon granted to the ex-president, which was questioned by the victims' families, among others.
