Peru: FA Ministry to continue managing procurement of COVID-19 vaccines decisively

09:05 | Lima, Aug. 25.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua has affirmed that his office will continue decisively implementing actions destined to procure COVID-19 vaccines for the country, as well as the immunization process as it is currently conducted.

According to the diplomat, this process will be carried out in constant coordination with the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to bolster the immunization drive in view of an imminent third wave of COVID-19.

"I want to tell the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue decisively implementing appropriate actions abroad so that the vaccine supply to Peru is constant and uninterrupted," he expressed.

Likewise, Maurtua explained that he will be in contact with the laboratories that produce the vaccines so as to have the adequate supply for next year in the event of booster vaccination campaigns and other drives aimed at protecting the population.

"To that end —in coordination with the Ministry of Health— we will permanently inform the public of concrete data to avoid misinformation and misinterpretation of our work," the minister stated.

"I can assure that we are completely willing and committed to palliating this pandemic," he added.

In addition, the Cabinet member noted that efforts will be doubled to achieve an important cross-border transit, as well as to determine that bilateral relations are prioritized and aim a new opportunity to increase economic exchange.

Likewise, he explained that the Peruvian diplomacy will reactivate the Chinchorro project (Arica, Chile) and —at the regional level— will work on the integration of Latin America and the Caribbean, without ideological distinctions.

"We will continue to promote the strengthening of the Andean Community. In addition, we are interested in boosting the Pacific Alliance," he added.

On the other hand, Maurtua affirmed that Peru is committed to multilateralism and that —in the face of climate change— all necessary actions will be taken to avoid eventual natural disasters.

Remarks were made on Tuesday during the ceremony marking the transfer of power, which featured outgoing Foreign Affairs Minister Hector Bejar and Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva.
