Peru FA, Env Ministers inaugurate meeting to boost pro-Amazon measures

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Gustavo Meza-Cuadra and his Environment peer Fabiola Muñoz on Monday inaugurated the First Technical-Political Meeting of the Signatory Countries of the Leticia Pact for the Amazon.

The meeting also saw the participation of delegations from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Suriname.

It was held within the framework of the Leticia Pact and seeks to promote actions for the preservation, conservation, and sustainable development of the Amazon area.


The Leticia Pact was signed by Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana on September 6. It intends be more efficient than the Amazon Cooperation Treaty of 1978.

The agreed topics were: strengthening the coordinated action to fight deforestation; establishing mechanisms for regional cooperation and information exchange; creating the Amazon Network for Cooperation in the face of natural disasters; as well as promoting research, technological development, technology transfer, and knowledge management processes.

Today's event was held at the Foreign Affairs Ministry's headquarters.
