Peru: Ex-President Pedro Castillo returns to Barbadillo Prison from hospital

Ex-President Pedro Castillo on Friday was returned to Lima-based Barbadillo Prison, after being discharged from the Social Health Insurance System's (EsSalud) Vitarte II Hospital, also in the capital city.

54-year-old Castillo had remained at said medical establishment for more than seven hours.

Amid strong security, the ex-Head of State left the facilities escorted towards a National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) ambulance.

Pedro Castillo was taken to the Vitarte II Hospital on Friday at 9:55 a.m. (local time) for having suffered health decompensation.


According to initial information, the former president was stable and being assisted by medical personnel.

In a statement, EsSalud indicated that Castillo Terrones had been admitted to the aforementioned health establishment due to chest pain.

"At the moment, the respective examinations and monitoring are being carried out; he is stable with favorable evolution and remains under observation," the first document indicated.

He is also investigated for having been the alleged ringleader of a criminal organization.
