One of the goals the Government of Peru has set for 2021 —the Independence Bicentennial— is to welcome 5.6 million foreign visitors, Deputy Tourism Minister Jose Vidal said Friday.

The achievement of this goal will have a positive impact on the national economy, with over US$6 billion in foreign exchange earnings.

In fact, he said, the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) is implementing actions to achieve this target.

Speaking at the 2019 Cusco-Inti Raymi Festivities launch event, Vidal affirmed that Mincetur has initiated meetings with government agencies, civil society, academia and private sector.

"No one can doubt the positive contribution of tourism to the country, not only on foreign currency generation but on the creation of jobs," the government official stated.

"We are on our way towards this. I urge all sector players to join us in reaching this objective towards the Independence Bicentennial," he continued.

According to Mincetur, Peru is expected to receive around 4.7 million overseas visitors until the end of 2019, a 9% increase compared to last year.
