Peruvian food's inclusion on Intangible Cultural Heritage List a bicentennial goal

18:45 | Lima, Feb. 1.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio on Friday affirmed that one of the Peruvian Independence Bicentennial Agenda's goals is to inscribe traditional Peruvian food on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In this sense, the Foreign Affairs Ministry participates in a cultural intersectoral round table —alongside civil society and relevant actors— to draw up the application file for the inscription of the Inca country's traditional food.

"We believe this work, towards 2021, will help all efforts be recognized and, therefore, emphasize the importance of cuisine for Peruvian identity and diversity," the official expressed.

Likewise, he affirmed raising awareness of the Inca country's gastronomy will be an essential way to promote the wealth and cultural diversity characteristic of Peru.

According to the diplomat, his portfolio has compiled an official list of Peruvian restaurants since 2006. At first, the list showed 1,793 establishments, and now 2,018 are registered.

"I have no doubt there are more than 5,000 around the world. This increase evidences the efforts we all make to further cement the (Peruvian) cuisine's position in the world," he added.
