Peru: Executive Branch vetoes bill allowing elderly inmates release

14:31 | Lima, Oct. 22.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday informed the Executive Branch vetoed the law allowing the release of prisoners over the age of 65.

He said Congress had approved the bill too quickly.

According to analysts, the bill was intended to essentially benefit 80-year-old Fujimori, who had been sentenced for crimes of corruption and against human rights.

"Today, we are vetoing the law. The arguments are entirely justified," he expressed.

However, the top official believes the Inca country does need a statute that authorizes elderly people —with health issues— to serve their sentence under house arrest.

Likewise, he said, this should be debated in depth to prevent people —who are deemed as a danger to society— to be released under such law.

"A bill like this is necessary, but it should be well evaluated, justified, and agreed upon," President Vizcarra concluded.
