Peru President: Revoking of Fujimori's pardon must be respected

11:59 | Lima, Oct. 5.

President Martin Vizcarra indicated the Judicial Branch's decision to annul ex-President Alberto Fujimori's pardon —for crimes against humanity— must be respected.

According to the Head of State, last year, when former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski used his constitutional powers to grant such clemency, he abided by his decision.

"Nine months have passed and the Judicial Branch has decided to revoke it (the humanitarian pardon). I understand the situation of Fujimori, of the people close to him, of his family," the statesman said in an interview with State-run channel TV Peru.

Furthermore, Parliament is empowered to decide whether to approve or not the bills seeking early release of inmates in the same —old age and poor health— condition as Fujimori, the top official said.

In this sense, he reaffirmed the Executive Branch respects the rulings made by the Judiciary and Parliament.

Regarding current Attorney General Pedro Chavarry, Vizcarra made it clear that prosecutors investigating the Port's White Collars criminal organization are the ones who link him to such network.

He went on to add the prosecutors themselves have urged Chavarry to resign and noted this was a personal decision.
