Defense Minister Jorge Chavez on Thursday guaranteed the absolute neutrality of the Armed Forces in the general elections scheduled for April 11, 2021, in accordance with the Peruvian Government's provisions as on previous occasions.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official met with National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) chief Piero Corvetto in order to start the first deployment-related coordination for the elections.

During the meeting, Minister Chavez expressed the sector's commitment to guaranteeing the normal development of the electoral process, within its powers, thus articulating the support of the Armed Forces for this purpose.

The Cabinet member agreed with the ONPE head on the timely exchange of information to coordinate the transfer, when required, of the electoral material to the 16,000 polling stations.

For his part, Corvetto thanked the Ministry of Defense for its willingness to collaborate with the requirements of the organization and thus guarantee that each Peruvian goes to vote respecting the corresponding biosafety measures on election day.

Held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense in Lima, the meeting was also attended by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Lieutenant General Carlos Chavez Cateriano, as well as the ONPE technical team.
