Peru Gov't ensures strict neutrality in 2021 general elections

Justice and Human Rights Minister Ana Neyra on Wednesday ensured the strict neutrality of the Government in the general elections called for April 11, 2021.

"At the Executive Branch, we secure our actions in line with the principle of neutrality," she said in a virtual press conference led by President Martin Vizcarra.

This principle, the minister explained, implies not favoring or being biased to any political organization or candidate.

Neyra remarked that the extraordinary congressional elections held in 2020 set a good precedent, on which the Government maintained a neutral stance.

"And the same will occur this year," she said, noting that the President called general elections for 2021 in a timely manner and according to law.

On Tuesday, the National Election Board (JNE) published the schedule for general elections slated for April 11, 2021, for the election of the President of the Republic, Vice-Presidents, Congress members, and Peruvian representatives at the Andean Parliament.

The main milestones of the schedule are the following:

October 12: Deadline to request registration of electoral alliances.

October 29: Deadline to register said alliances between political organizations.

December 9: Deadline to publish results of parties’ primary elections.

December 22: Deadline to submit documents for registration of presidential and vice-presidential tickets, as well as Congress candidates.

December 22: Deadline to register political organizations.

February 10: Deadline for resignation and withdrawal of candidates.
