Peru Defense Min: Allowing nighttime activities no advisable if contagion risk exists

12:05 | Lima, May. 26.

Defense Minister Walter Martos on Tuesday affirmed that —as long as there is a risk of covid-19 infection in Peru— the most advisable option is not to allow nighttime activities in order to avoid crowds.

The minister noted that the disease will not end in June, because there are millions of Peruvians who are not infected and are not immune; so if there are people who may be infected, the best thing is to wait for a vaccine, since danger persists.

"We will be assessing the course of the pandemic but —from the safety point of view— the most advisable option is not to allow nighttime activities involving crowds if the pandemic persists and there are people who may be infected," he expressed.

During an operation against informal trade in Lima's La Victoria district, Martos argued that this is why the Government imposed mandatory social immobilization (curfew) at night, in order to protect vulnerable people, those who may end up in intensive care units.

"That is why the Government must take the most appropriate measures, so as to prevent them from becoming infected, and one of these measures is to be home earlier," the Cabinet member explained.

"If the curfew was not in place, some nighttime activities —which are not adequate during this pandemic— would have to be resumed," he added.
