Peru: Cusco regains tourist flow, reaches pre-pandemic figures

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo on Tuesday underscored that Peru's tourism sector is improving.

Regarding Cusco, the southern Peruvian region might have already regained pre-pandemic figure.

According to reports, the southern city's Velasco Astete International Airport might have registered a 3% increase in tourist arrivals.

Taking as a framework the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings that were recently held in Urubamba (Cusco region) and previously in Arequipa, Minister Galdo stated that the rates of tourist arrivals from the 21 member countries have increased by 50% if compared to last year's figures.

"Tourism is one of the industries that has been hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic; yet it remains a resilient economic activity; despite enduring significant challenges due to the pandemic and social conflicts, it is recovering," she told TVPeru.

In this regard, the Cabinet member indicated that the recent meeting of APEC tourism ministers in the city of Urubamba has been a major opportunity.

"Beyond the ministerial meetings, there are also bilateral meetings where we convey the concerns we have as a country regarding tourism," she indicated.

Galdo added that visitors have "fallen in love," become fascinated with Cusco, and are eager to return with their families, which means they will be "ambassadors" of the wonders Peru hosts such as the Machu Picchu Sanctuary.

Moreover, the Cabinet member highlighted the increase in Machu Picchu's tourist capacity from 4,500 to 5,600, as well as the establishment of three routes to manage the tourist flow, seeking sustainability and heritage preservation.
