Peru: Cusco launches first religious tourism circuit

13:42 | Cusco (Cusco region), May. 29.

More than 3,000 tourists and locals enjoyed the first evening religious tour of the Imperial City of Cusco, including cultural and academic events, as well as visits to the impressive Cathedral Basilica and the City Hall Convention Center.

The activities took place during the last two weeks of May —the Museum Month. Entire families and visitors —both domestic and international— agreed to learn more about the culture and identity of Cusco inhabitants.

The Archbishopric of Cusco —organizer of the tour— delivered keynote addresses, such as: "Museums as Cultural Hubs, the Future of Tradition," an academic event that gathered various specialists in cultural-artistic heritage, history, and museums.

Besides the cultural events, the circuit included a concert featuring the Symphony Orchestra of Cusco. More than 6,000 attendees were delighted with the melodies and symphonies inside the Cathedral.

Theater performances by Teatro Experimental Universitario Qosqo —an experimental theatre group at San Antonio Abad University— took place at the principal church of the Andean city.

Additionally, nearly 2,000 people learned about the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's life and contributions, the 1650 earthquake chronicle, and the origin of the devotion to Taytacha de los Temblores (Lord of the Earthquakes), among other things.
