The Regional Health Management (Geresa) in Peru's northern Lambayeque region —in coordination with the Ministry of Health (Minsa)— started the vaccination against COVID-19 of older adults aged above 80.

The process takes place in the districts of Chiclayo, Jose Leonardo Ortiz, La Victoria, Ferreñafe, and Lambayeque.

The immunization campaign was possible following the arrival of 9,360 Pfizer vaccines in the region.

Within this framework, nine educational institutions are chosen as strategic vaccination points.

Victoria Cardenas, 95, was the first citizen in this area to receive the vaccine dose.

Meanwhile, adults over 80 years of age —who have mobility problems— are inoculated at home by health brigades in charge of this task.

In this sense, Geresa Lambayeque Manager Felix Garcia affirmed that the virtual platform is already enabled for older adults —with disabilities or difficulties to travel to vaccination centers— to sign up and receive a visit from health staff.

Garcia indicated that the five districts were prioritized in accordance with population density and degree of affectation due to COVID-19.

"There are three days scheduled for the application of the dose, and an additional day could be included for the benefit of those who could not get vaccinated on the scheduled date," he said.

Across Lambayeque, 30,346 adults over 80 have been identified. They must be vaccinated during the first immunization stage with a territorial approach applied by Minsa.

All older adults must attend vaccination centers accompanied by one family member, wearing a face mask and face shield, as well as complying with physical distancing to avoid any risk of COVID-19 contagion.
