The Ministry of Defense (Mindef) and Armed Forces urged all citizens to respect the results of the presidential runoff election held last Sunday and to work together with the aim of strengthening democracy and boosting development in the country.

In a statement, Mindef reminded citizens that the Political Constitution establishes that the primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to guarantee the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic.

Likewise, the government agency specified that the armed institutions are deliberative and subordinate to the constitutional power. Therefore, any call to interrupt this task is inappropriate for a democracy.

The Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces reiterated their commitment to the Constitution, democracy, and the principle of neutrality assumed by the Transition and Emergency Government, while reaffirming the commitment to respect citizens' will expressed at the polls.

"In addition, we urge all Peruvians to respect the results of the electoral process and to work together to strengthen democracy and promote the development of the country. We call for unity above all our differences," the document read.

Mindef also reminded citizens that —during election periods— the Armed Forces must guarantee the free exercise of the right to vote, protect electoral officials, and guard electoral material.

Lastly, it indicated that the emblems and any other form of national identity of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Army, Navy, and Air Force cannot be used by natural or legal persons, public or private, unless expressly authorized by the highest authority of these institutions.
