Peru continues applauding heroes fighting against coronavirus, greets President Vizcarra

00:00 | Lima, Mar. 23.

Loud applause and cheers from residents of various districts belonging to the city of Lima were heard on Sunday night as means to greet Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on his 57th birthday and thank the anonymous heroes who fight against coronavirus (COVID-19) —a disease that keeps Peru in 15-day mandatory social isolation and immobilization.

At 8:00 p.m., children, teenagers, and adults opened their doors or went out to their balconies in order applaud the efforts undertaken by doctors, nurses, firefighters, police, and military members, who risk their lives and health working for the sake of other Peruvians.

Social media users reported the display of solidarity and gratitude occurred in various districts. Earlier on Sunday, users managed to organize themselves online with the purpose of greeting the Head of State.

In some cases, the residents even exhibited national flags and played the traditional song "Contigo Peru" (I am with you, Peru) at full volume.

Approval at 87%

According to an Ipsos-Peru poll published in El Comercio newspaper on Sunday, 87% of the population approve of the President's performance, whereas 11% do not, and 2% have no opinion on the matter.

Likewise, 83% of citizens indicated that they approve of the Government's performance against COVID-19, 16% disapprove of it, and 1% did not specify.
