The Congress of the Republic has been able to muster the necessary consensus to elect the six magistrates of the
Constitutional Court (TC) so as to replace those whose mandate had already expired.
By agreement of the Board of Spokespersons, it was not possible to present a debate or preliminary questions during the plenary session on Tuesday. The candidates were ranked in order of merit.
The first to be elected was Francisco Morales Saravia, who will replace Ernesto Blume Fortini. Morales received 98 votes in favor, 21 against, and six abstentions.
Afterwards, Luis Gutierrez Ticse was elected with 97 votes in favor, 23 against, and five abstentions. He will replace Eloy Espinosa-Saldaña.
The new magistrate replacing Marianella Ledesma is Helder Dominguez. He received 98 votes in favor, 19 against, and eight abstentions.
Likewise, Luz Pacheco Zerga was elected with 92 votes in favor, 26 against, and seven abstentions. She will replace Manuel Miranda Canales.
Another recently elected magistrate is Manuel Monteagudo Valdez. He received 102 votes in favor, 14 against, and eight abstentions. In this case, he will replace late magistrate Carlos Ramos Nuñez.
Finally, Cesar Ochoa Cardich was elected to replace Jose Luis Sardon. He obtained 90 votes in favor, 23 against, and 10 abstentions.
On the other hand, non-grouped lawmaker Susel Paredes submitted four appeals for reconsideration of the votes received by Francisco Morales, Luis Gutierez, Helder Dominguez and Luz Pacheco, which were rejected as they did not reach the necessary votes.
