13:00 | Lima, Sep. 15.

During a Congress plenary session on Thursday, most legislators approved a motion of censure against Transportation and Communications Minister Geiner Alvarado.

The initiative received 94 votes in favor, 14 against, and 8 abstentions.

Congress Chairman Jose Williams reported that the decision will be communicated to the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, so that the provisions of the Political Constitution's Article 132 and Article 86 (subparagraph b) of Parliament Regulations are complied with.

The latter provides that censored Cabinet members must resign from office, and the Head of State must accept their resignation within the following 72 hours.

During the session, a point of order was submitted to consult the Constitution Commission on the censure against Alvarado over his work at the Ministry of Housing. However, it was rejected.

Alvarado was sworn in as Minister of Transportation and Communications on August 5, 2022. Previously, he had been serving as Minister of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation since July 29, 2021.
