The esplanade of Qorikancha —the lavish Inca temple dedicated to revering the Sun— became the stage for the ceremony during which Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Rocio Barrios handed over the Safe Travels stamp to officials from the Southern Andean city of Cusco.

Said seal is the world's first distinctive of safety and hygiene for tourism activities in times of COVID-19.

This recognition was received by Cusco Region Governor Jean Paul Benavente and Province Mayor Romi Infantas on Friday.

"Tourism is the economic activity that has suffered the greatest blow due to the coronavirus pandemic," Barrios said.

"For the progressive and responsible reactivation in Cusco, we want to offer visitors the best possible travel experience featuring destinations and services that comply with strict protocols. Today, we deliver the Safe Travels stamp to the city of Cusco. It is the first city in Peru to receive this emblem," she emphasized.

For the imperial metropolis to get this distinctive stamp, its authorities formally requested the awarding to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).

Afterwards, coordinated efforts were undertaken by regional and local authorities, as well as the private sector to gather information, verify compliance with the protocols, and implement corrective measures linked to disinfection, waste management, and others —all that under the protection of the protocols issued by the Peruvian Government.

Likewise, permanent follow-up and monitoring of compliance with biosafety measures has been considered. This must be fully accomplished.

"The commitment of the tourism sector's agents and the population is very important. Only this way will we be able to give visitors —when they think about returning— the confidence to arrive in the area and get to know the innumerable tourist attractions in this beautiful city," she underlined.

The archaeological capital of the Americas is home to numerous tourist attractions such as Sacsayhuaman; the Qorikancha, Qenko and Tambomachay temples; the picturesque neighborhood of San Blas; and the Mayor Cathedral.

Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of Cusco became the latest destination in Peru to obtain the Safe Travels stamp.

On Saturday, Minister Rocío Barrios presented the badge to the corresponding authorities in a ceremony held at Ollantaytambo Archaeological Park.

About

The Safe Travels stamp —awarded by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC)— involves a set of protocols that follow guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) to have a general health policy for the tourism industry and to restore confidence in travelers, providing clear guidelines for the resumption of tourism activities on a global scale.

The stamp enables travelers to recognize destinations around the world which have adopted standardized global health and hygiene protocols, so they can experience 'Safe Travels.'
