Peru: Cusco Governor tests positive for COVID-19

18:35 | Lima, Jul. 17.

Cusco Region Governor Jean Paul Benavente will have to comply with home isolation measures after testing positive for COVID-19. Thus, he becomes the seventh regional authority infected with the virus.

In a statement, the Cusco Region Government on Friday reported that Benavente —who underwent a molecular test— may have contracted the disease during the activities he was leading on the front line against the pandemic.

On July 16, the official underwent a molecular test, and today he was notified he had tested positive.

Thus, the Cusco Region Government urged the population to redouble prevention measures against the new coronavirus.

Other governors infected with COVID-19 are Carlos Rua (Ayacucho), Zenon Cuevas (Moquegua), and Luis Hidalgo (Madre de Dios). On the other hand, Elisban Ochoa (Loreto), Juan Alvarado (Huanuco), and Pedro Ubaldo (Pasco) have already overcome the disease and returned to work.

As is known, Cusco is the region that houses the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, among other archaeological sites.
