Get to know Peru's health protocol to avoid COVID-19 while visiting Machu Picchu

12:27 | Cusco (Cusco region), Oct. 29.

Visitors who have entrance tickets to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu —which will reopen its doors to tourists starting November 1— must keep in mind the mandatory compliance with the established sanitary protocol to access and enjoy the tour of the historic sanctuary and archaeological park declared a World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Sanitary protocol

The measures established by the sanitary protocol require that each visitor must wear a face mask when entering and during their entire stay in the Inca citadel, as well as carry the health affidavit in print or digital format on a mobile phone.

This is followed by the measurement of body temperature. Those who present 38°C or more will not be allowed to enter the Inca citadel.

If any symptoms associated with COVID-19 are identified, the suspect will be isolated in a special area, and the incident will be immediately reported to the competent authority.

Before starting the tour, it is necessary to disinfect visitors' footwear and personal equipment, as well as to have clean hands (hygiene).

During the tour of the citadel, each tourist must maintain a minimum social distance of 1.5 meters. The consumption of food is not allowed during the visit.

Visitors are also prohibited from collecting or taking with them archaeological or natural material, as well as from touching the surfaces of the archaeological walls, as established in the "Regulation for sustainable use and tourist visits for the conservation of the citadel of Machu Picchu."

Schedule

During the health emergency, the daily tourist visits to Machu Picchu begin at 6:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.

According to the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) of Cusco, there are nine time ranges for the entry of visitors to the citadel of Machu Picchu, the first time range being from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. and the last one from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Visitors must board the bus that will take them from Machu Picchu Town to the Inca citadel, with a maximum of 30 minutes prior to the time range that appears on their respective entrance tickets.
