Peru: Avocado exports break record in 2018

Peruvian avocado exports amounted to almost US$800 million in 2018, thus increasing 26% compared to the previous year and breaking a record, Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) informed on Wednesday.

The Inca country's avocados currently reach a total of 35 markets. The main destinations are the Netherlands (US$275.9 million), the United States (US$191.1 million), and Spain (US$111.8 million). 

Over the last decade, shipments have accumulated an 842.2% expansion, as they amounted to US$84.8 million in 2008. 
 
Between 2008 and 2018, avocado sales expanded to over 10 new markets such as China (US$30.6 million), Costa Rica (US$5.2 million), South Korea (US$4.3 million), Belgium (US$4.3 million), Russia (US$3.2 million), Australia (US$2.6 million), Portugal (US$556,000), New Zealand (US$503,000), United Arab Emirates (US$298,000), and India (US$277,000).

Fresh

Furthermore, fresh avocados reached US$724.3 million in 2018, a 23.2% rise compared to the previous year. Plus, they represented 90% of total avocado shipments.

It should be noted these avocados have accumulated a 906.8% increase over the last 10-year period.

Moreover, its global average price has expanded during the same period. 

Frozen

On the other hand, frozen avocados registered a progressive rise, posting a 61.4% increase and totaling US$66.3 million in 2018.

The top destinations were the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Sweden.
