Avocados are Peruvian exports' "green gold," as they have maintained sustained growth in recent years and exceeded US$570 million during the first nine months of 2017, private-run Foreign Trade Society (ComexPeru) stressed.

According to the International Trade Centre (ITC), Peru ranks as the third largest avocado exporter in the world since 2014, only surpassed by Mexico and the Netherlands.

Based on National Customs and Tax Administration's (Sunat) figures, Peruvian avocado exports climbed 64% between 2013 and 2014, going from US$183.6 million to US$301 million.

Moreover, avocado shipments amounted to US$306 million in 2015, thus registering a 1.6% rise.

The fruit reached US$396.9 million (+29.7%) in 2016 and positioned itself as Peru's third-most exported non-traditional product.

Within this framework, ComexPeru pointed out results continue to be favorable since exports of said product totaled US$570.3 million between January and September, a 43.7% increase from the same period last year.

Such expansion was underpinned by greater shipments to the Netherlands, the main Peruvian avocado importer (US$206.9 million; +26.7%).

Exports to the United States (US$165.5 million; +121.1%), Spain (US$88.9 million; +13.9%), the United Kingdom (US$57.8 million; +30.2%), and China (US$12.9 million; +181.4%) also saw increases in this sense.

The guild also noted the U.S. stands out as the most attractive market to continue expanding Peruvian avocado shipments, "especially if —in 2016— merely 3.6% of its avocado imports came from Peru."
