Attorney General Patricia Benavides on Tuesday decided to initiate a preliminary investigation against the President of the Republic Dina Boluarte and Prime Minister Alberto Otarola over the deaths that occurred during protests in Peru.

Similarly, the investigation includes Ministers Victor Rojas (Interior) and Jorge Chavez (Defense).

Via the Public Ministry's Twitter account, it was announced that this preliminary investigation also includes Pedro Angulo, in his capacity as ex-Prime Minister; and Cesar Cervantes, in his capacity as ex-Minister of Interior.

"The preliminary investigation is due to the alleged crimes of genocide, qualified homicide, and serious injuries, committed during the demonstrations (held) in the months of December 2022 and January 2023 in Apurimac, La Libertad, Puno, Junin, Arequipa, and Ayacucho regions," the Public Ministry reported.

In remarks to the press made from the city of Trujillo, the Public Ministry head pointed out that this comes in addition to the inquiries regarding the deaths registered during the demonstrations and riots held in December 2022.
