Peru: Attorney General's Office opens investigation file on Puno deaths

13:13 | Trujillo (La Libertad), Jan. 10.

Attorney General Patricia Benavides on Tuesday indicated that her office opened a new prosecutorial investigation file on the events registered in Peru's southern Puno region over recent days.

In remarks to the press made from the city of Trujillo, the Public Ministry head pointed out that this comes in addition to the inquiries regarding the deaths registered during the demonstrations and riots held in December 2022.

These are in the "preliminary proceedings stage," she indicated.

"Today, we are making the decision to open a new prosecutorial file," the Attorney General affirmed.

This will be aimed at "the high-ranking officials who are allegedly responsible for everything that is happening," Benavides indicated.

The classification of the acts perpetrated is being prepared, she indicated.

Necropsies in progress

Regarding the 17 people who died in Puno due to the riots held last Monday, she indicated that the corresponding necropsies have been carried out since 8:00 a.m. (local time) today.

Benavides pointed out that the Public Ministry "will remain firm in its constitutional mission to prevent and investigate crimes."

In Puno, this is done via the crime prevention prosecutor's office, the criminal prosecutor's offices, and those for organized crime, the magistrate specified.

Moreover, she said that in various parts of the country there have been attacks, not only on the Public Ministry offices, but also on other public entities.
