Peru: Anti-corruption reforms ready for referendum after Congress' approval

10:33 | Lima, Oct. 4.

Peruvian Congress voted in favor of putting the four constitutional reforms —proposed by the Executive Branch— to a referendum.

The unanimous voting took place at Parliament's headquarters in early morning hours of Thursday.

Proposals are expected to be exposed for public consultation on December 9.

They will address lawmakers' re-election, a bicameral legislature, political parties' private financing, and a reform of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) —recently renamed National Justice Board.

The draft bills were passed within the deadline set by the Legislative Power —October 4.

The signed document will be submitted to the Executive to initiate the process for said referendum, Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry explained.

"Parliament honors its commitments," the Congress head said as he finished up the plenary session in the presence of Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva and Justice Minister Vicente Zeballos.
