Peru & Switzerland to expand trade relations, investments

14:56 | Lima, Dec. 4.

Swiss State Secretary at the Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch affirmed Switzerland not only seeks to cooperate with Peru, but also to increase their trade and investment relations.

In this sense, she indicated the Inca country currently shows a good performance, and its macroeconomic figures are proof of that.

According to the official, her nation —and its companies— consider important that Peru has remained an open economy for 18 years, claiming "this is a good sign for investments and international markets."

Likewise, Ineichen-Fleisch stated trade between the two countries is mainly made up of commodities, and some processed agricultural products

"I think it can be improved. Moreover, I know the Peruvian Government seeks greater economic diversification and more industrialization," she expressed.

The SECO representative went on to add exports and imports between Peru and Switzerland have increased significantly since the Free Trade Agreement came into force.

Concerning organic agricultural products, the official pointed out coffee and cacao are deemed as very promising goods. Within this framework, many projects are intended for their development.

Furthermore, she mentioned the European nation is interested in many Peruvian economic sectors, especially in public communications infrastructure development.

Besides, opportunities exist in water and sanitation, as well as energy projects.

"I think we could diversify more our presence in Peru. I am sure we can increase investment and bilateral trade (...)," Ineichen-Fleisch concluded.

It should be noted the Swiss State Secretary has renewed Switzerland's commitment to supporting competitiveness and economic development in the Inca nation.
