Peru, Swiss Embassy to join efforts for glacial risk management

11:15 | Huaraz (Ancash region), May. 4.

Swiss Ambassador to Peru Markus-Alexander Antonietti and central-northern Ancash region's authorities held a meeting to assess the Glaciers+ Project's progress, within the framework of the Climate Change Global Program.

Said gathering also featured Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) representatives.

According to Antonietti, this initiative seeks to improve the comprehensive adaptation capacity, as well as reduce disaster risks in the face of glacier retreat in the Inca country —especially in Ancash region.

In this regard, he informed this project fostered public and private investment initiatives. It also enabled the consolidation of disaster risk management and climate change adaptation mechanisms.

At the meeting, authorities and communities were informed about the relevance, impacts, and opportunities of glacial risk management.

"Before we lack oil, we might lack water," Antonietti warned. Thus, these kinds of projects seek to ensure water presence worldwide.

He also referred to natural disasters and the need to prevent or be prepared to face them.

For her part, Ancash Regional Government’s Natural Resources Department Manager Mirtha Cervantes praised this project, as she noted there are 22 lagoons in the region, which pose a danger to the population.

Lastly, the need to rely on a Regional Environmental Information System (SIAR) was stressed, which was a consensus among participants.

The Glaciers+ Project is a Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation's (Cosude) initiative.
