The softness, quality, and resilience of alpaca fiber can be appreciated in the most exclusive stores around the world, where products derived from this camelid (fur) have been exported for a value of US$72 million between January and May 2023, showing a 0.6% increase over the same period last year, Peru's Commission for Promotion of Export and Tourism (PromPeru) has reported.

The main destination markets were Italy (US$18 million), China (US$17 million), the United States (US$12 million), Norway (US$5 million), and Sweden (US$4 million).

A total of 218 products were exported, with fiber experiencing the highest growth at 6.2%, followed by yarns (+12.5%) and knitted garments (+22.7%).

The exports of knitted garments reached US$7 million due to increased demand from the United States (+25.2%), Switzerland (+459.1%), Chile (+97.8%), the United Kingdom (+32%), and Australia (+66%).

The most requested products in the knitted garments category were other wool and fine hair sweaters (+31.5%), socks and stockings (+74.6%), shawls and scarves (+15.8%), gloves and mittens (+12.4%), and cardigans (+53.7%).

In 2022, alpaca exports amounted to US$187 million, which showed a 1.8% increase compared to the previous year, reaching 69 markets with a total of 126 products.

During this year, new destinations were accessed, such as Madagascar, Lebanon, Myanmar, Malta, and the Czech Republic.

To promote alpaca at the international level, PromPeru encourages companies to participate in various commercial platforms around the world, mainly in Europe and Asia, under the brand "Alpaca del Perú," aiming to position it globally, as well as showcase its origin and advantages, which have led it to become synonymous with luxury and exclusivity.

Alpaca will also be present at Peru Moda Deco 2023, which, in its twenty-fifth anniversary, will have the participation of more than 50 companies in the clothing and decoration line associated with this camelid, along with around 60 international buyers.
