Peru: Alejandro Toledo trial begins on September 11

The oral trial of former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) over the alleged crimes committed in the awarding of two South Interoceanic Highway stretches will begin on Monday, September 11.

The Judiciary announced that the hearing, to mark the beginning of the aforementioned proceedings, will be in charge of the Second Collegiate Criminal Court attached to the National Superior Court.

The proceedings, in which Toledo and six other people will participate as defendants, has been scheduled for 9:00 a.m. (local time) on the aforementioned date, and will be held on the Google Meet platform.

Accused citizens and penalties

Along with the former head of state, entrepreneurs Fernando Camet and Jose Castillo are being prosecuted. For each of them, the Prosecutor's Office has requested the Judiciary to impose a custodial sentence of 20 years and six (6) months.

Similarly, nine (9) years in prison are requested for Sergio Bravo, Alberto Pasco-Font, and Avraham Dan On.

The sixth defendant is Gonzalo Ferraro. For him, a custodial sentence of 11 years and six (6) months is requested.

The citizens are charged with the alleged commission of the crimes of collusion and money laundering linked to the irregular awarding of the aforementioned road infrastructure work in favor of Brazilian construction companies and their local affiliates.

The Second Collegiate Criminal Court of the National Superior Court is headed by Judge Zaida Perez, and complemented by magistrates Ricardo Manrique and Juan Roldan.



According to the Prosecutor's Office, Toledo allegedly received a bribe worth US$35 million from Brazilian construction companies to favor them in the bidding for the South Interoceanic Highway, while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).
