The Second Collegiate Criminal Court has decided to reschedule for October 16 and 17 the initial hearing of the oral trial against former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) and others over the alleged crimes of collusion and money laundering.

The in-person session will be held at the Carlos Zavala Loayza building, next to the Palace of Justice in Lima. It will start at 9:00 a.m. (local time).

It was decided to manage the selection of a courtroom and the implementation of the interconnection system with the penitentiary establishment at which Alejandro Toledo is being held under pre-trial detention.

He will participate by videoconference or through the Google Meet platform.

The accused persons who do not attend without any justification will be declared defendants in contempt of court.

It was decided to reschedule the oral trial's initial hearing in order to contribute to an effective and due completion of the trial stage, granting the parties the opportunity to access the evidence admitted in the intermediate stage, duly collated and organized in the judicial file, guaranteeing their right to contradiction.

The present is a voluminous file that involves more than 220 notebooks and 50 additional volumes.

The State Attorney's Office and the former president's defense have not yet complied with providing the evidence that was admitted to them.

The second court considered it imperative to have an additional period before the start of the oral trial, not only to complete the process of forming the judicial file, but also to gather the response to notifications sent to accused citizens Gonzalo Camet Picone, with residence in Spain, and Avraham Dan On, with residence in Israel, processed through international cooperation. There is no response to date.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Toledo allegedly received a bribe worth US$35 million from Brazilian construction companies to favor them in the bidding for the South Interoceanic Highway, while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).
