Peru: Alan Garcia said to have bribed El Fronton Case Prosecutor with US$25,000

13:22 | Lima, Dec. 13.

Deceased ex-Peruvian President Alan Garcia (1985-1990; 2006-2011) is said to have paid a US$25,000 bribe to El Fronton Case Prosecutor Mario Gonzales Diaz in order to shelve the investigation against him, according to Lava Jato Case cooperating witness under the code CE-2017-007-4.

In that case, Garcia was investigated for the alleged crimes of qualified homicide, crime against public safety, and crime against the public administration during his first term in office, which also generated one of the worst economic crisis in Peruvian history.

According to IDL-Reporteros investigative journalism site, the cooperating witness told Prosecutor Milagros Salazar that Alan Garcia —accompanied by his former Secretary and former Production Minister Luis Nava— met with Prosecutor Gonzales.

"The collaborator says that Prosecutor Mario Gonzales Diaz offered them to shelve the case, but added that he was afraid of the consequences and that if —as he feared— he were thrown out of the Prosecutor's Office, they —his interlocutors— should help him," said IDL-Reporteros.

The investigation also mentions that Prosecutor Gonzales —despite everything— feared for his future after the case was shelved. According to the collaborator's statement, Garcia told him not to worry and guaranteed that he would help him.

"And so it was: on November 30, 2004, Prosecutor Mario Gonzales Diaz —then Provincial Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office specialized in forced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, and exhumation of clandestine graves— shelved the investigation against Alan Garcia," IDL-Reporteros remarked.
