The Ministry of Foreign Affairs ordered changes and expansions to polling stations in various jurisdictions around the world in order to improve logistical conditions and ensure that Peruvians abroad can cast their ballots more smoothly and without disruptions in the June 7 runoff elections.

Expansion of polling centers

The Ministry reported that the number of polling stations in Santiago, Chile, was expanded from one to five for the nearly 108,000 voters eligible in that jurisdiction.

In addition, authorities have arranged the preparation of new polling centers in Charlotte, Boston, and Miami (United States); Montreal (Canada); Sao Paulo (Brazil); Barcelona (Spain); Bern (Switzerland); Milan (Italy); as well as Sydney and Perth (Australia).

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, seven polling stations will be set up across six countries: Riyadh (Saudi Arabia); Dubai and Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates); Tel Aviv (Israel); Amman (Jordan); Kuwait City (Kuwait); and Doha (Qatar).

In that regard, authorities specified that the only countries where elections will not be held are Venezuela, Iran, and Lebanon.

Logistical deployment

Regarding the deployment of electoral materials, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs arranged for them to be personally transported by diplomatic officials to consular offices in Beijing (China); Moscow (Russia); Pretoria (South Africa); Havana (Cuba); and Leticia (Colombia).

Authorities indicated that the measure responds to the complexities of transportation routes to some of these destinations and is intended to ensure their timely delivery.

Exceptional measures

The National Elections Board (JNE) authorized consular offices to replace absent regular or alternate polling station members with members drawn from other polling centers.

The measure also includes voters from other polling stations, provided they cast their ballots at the same polling center and party representatives raise no objections.

"With these measures, the timely and early opening of polling stations abroad is ensured, preventing long lines and excessive delays," the Foreign Affairs Ministry concluded.
