The resolution approved last Wednesday at the United National General Assembly means the existence of an overwhelming majority in favor of a ceasefire and withdrawal of Russia's military forces in Ukraine to make way for a peaceful solution, Permanent Representative of Peru to the UN Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros reported on Thursday.

In remarks to RPP Noticias, the ambassador said that, although it is true that the resolution does not rely on binding elements, this represents an overwhelming majority opinion of the international community to influence the actual development of events.

"If we compare today's situation with (that of) the day before yesterday, there is pressure, a demand from the international community so that the situation de-escalates and that negotiations and talks can be promoted," he specified.

The diplomat indicated that talks between Russia and Ukraine have been held for three days to seek a peaceful and negotiated solution.

In this sense, the representative indicated that a nuclear attack is not foreseeable, which otherwise "would be the universal holocaust."

In this regard, Ambassador Rodriguez Cuadros said Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov has absolutely ruled out any possibility of using nuclear weapons.

Likewise, the envoy stressed that Peru's vote in favor of the resolution of non-aggression in Ukraine represents a historic and legal expression that is consistent and represents the permanent national interests of Peru.

The document was approved with 141 votes in favor, 5 against, and 35 abstentions. Within this framework, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, and Syria voted against the initiative; while China, Bolivia, Cuba, El Salvador, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Nicaragua, and Pakistan, among others, abstained.

The text —promoted by Europeans and Ukraine— deplores in the strongest terms the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in violation of Article 2 of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits resorting to the threat or use of forces.

It also urges all members to respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of any State.
