The Olmos irrigation and hydroelectric project is expected to create 50,000 direct and 100,000 indirect job opportunities resulting from a series of agro commercial and industrial activities to be implemented in the following years, Lambayeque region’s Governor Humberto Acuña announced.

In statements to Andina news agency, he explained Olmos is considering the construction of a hydroelectric plant, likely to begin this year and be completed in 2018, with the aim of providing energy to Lambayeque, Piura, Tumbes, with the possibility of selling energy to Ecuador.

“Its construction has to start in the third quarter of the year, or next year at the latest, to ensure the set deadlines are met. The concession holder is undertaking the preliminary works,” he stated.

The hydroelectric plant would be completed by December 2018 with an investment of US$94 million.

“Olmos project is going to be crucial to get the Lambayeque’s marine terminal off the ground,” he pointed out.

On the matter, Acuña said the technical file for its construction has already been approved by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and four companies are interested in bidding.

“I believe all marine terminal concessions will be granted this year,” he added.

The bidding process for the construction of the new city of Olmos will open on the following days. Works would begin in June 2015 with an investment of S/.130 million (about US$41.6 million).

The city will accommodate people involved in the Olmos project.
