Ollanta Humala Tasso was sworn in Thursday as President of the Republic of Peru for a five-year term.

Humala placed his hand on a Bible and swore to "tirelessly fight for the social inclusion of the poorest."

Humala received the presidential sash from Congress president Daniel Abugatas at a ceremony held in the presence of several heads of state from the region.

The Peruvian leader said he will honor the values and principles of the 1979 Constitution.

"I will recognize and respect the freedom of religion and expression and will fight tirelessly for the social inclusion of all Peruvians, especially the poorest," he said.

The inauguration ceremony, taking place on Peru's Independence Day, is attended by Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, Chile's Sebastian Piñera, Ecuador's Rafael Correa, Bolivia's Evo Morales, Uruguay's Jose Mujica, Argentina's Cristina Fernandez, Colombia's Juan Manuel Santos, Honduras’ Porfirio Lobo, Panama’s Ricardo Martinelli and Guatemala’s Alvaro Colom.
