OAS: Peru referendum delivers decisive result, no evidence of fraud

13:00 | Lima, Dec. 11.

The Electoral Experts Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) affirmed Peru's referendum —held last Sunday— delivered a decisive result.

Gerardo de Icaza —a member of the Mission composed of 14 officials and experts— pointed out there was no evidence of fraud despite claims by some opposition politicians.

"(…) the report's highlight was the decisive result (of the vote)," de Icaza told Andina news agency.

Likewise, the Mission congratulated electoral authorities on their ability to organize in a short-term the national referendum.

Headed by the former Deputy Foreign Minister and former Dominican Deputy Minou Tavárez Mirabal, the Mission published the preliminary report that presents the observations and information gathered in the interviews held with the different actors of Peruvian society, and during the day of the referendum.

In order to carry out a substantive analysis of the entire electoral process, the experts held meetings with electoral bodies, government authorities, representatives of political organizations and civil society actors.

As is known, President Vizcarra called a referendum to submit four political-justice reforms for public consultation.
They were proposed by the Executive Branch and subsequently approved by Congress.

Said proposals addressed lawmakers' reelection, bicameral legislature, political parties' private financing, and a reform of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) —renamed National Justice Board.

It should be noted Peruvians approved three of them, while they rejected the bicameral reform.
