OAS Electoral Observation Mission to visit Peru next week

Permanent Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. Ambassador Hugo de Zela held an urgent meeting with the Secretary General of the OAS Luis Almagro, in which he requested the deployment of an Electoral Observation Mission.


Secretary General Almagro reiterated the OAS' commitment to sending said Electoral Observation Mission and expressed his willingness so that it can begin its work immediately.

To do so, it was agreed that the Mission would be sent as soon as possible, taking into account that the electoral process has already begun with the call for general elections.

De Zela reported that Peruvian authorities have agreed that the Electoral Observation Mission could start its activities in the country as soon as possible.

Among its tasks, the Mission shall hold meetings with Government authorities, electoral authorities, and the main political forces.

Thus, the Electoral Observation Mission will be able to contribute to creating appropriate conditions for the electoral process and confirm that the election timetable is being met.

Finally, Almagro announced that a Mission led by former Paraguayan Foreign Affairs Minister Ruben Ramirez will visit Peru next week.

The aim is to cooperate with the Government, electoral authorities, and the Peruvian people, so that general elections are carried out with the corresponding guarantees, citizens can express their decision, and the person elected assumes the Presidency of the Republic on July 28, 2021.
