MEF readies study on new engines to drive Peru's economy

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) said it is preparing a study on new engines or industries with the potential to boost Peruvian economic activity.

"At the MEF, we are working on—and are close to completing—a study that I hope we will be able to publish soon on new growth engines," Deputy Economy Minister Gerardo Lopez told Andina News Agency.

"We have identified several industries that, while they may appear consolidated, still have significant room for growth and strong potential," he added.

The government official highlighted mining activity as a central pillar of Peru's economy, while noting that the sector that still holds significant potential is complementary services to mining.

"There are clearly major mining investment projects in Peru, which is very positive, but there is also the full range of complementary services demanded by mining; in this area, we are becoming a country with specialized expertise, and these services could be exported," Lopez indicated.

"Moreover, when thinking about growth drivers, we should focus, for example, on copper, because the automotive and electrical industries, as well as artificial intelligence, are increasingly demanding this mineral for use in technological products. As a result, we could become a country that begins to industrialize and develop products with a certain degree of added value," he added.

The deputy minister highlighted other growth drivers that could boost the Peruvian economy, which are being developed mainly in the regions.

"Agro-industry is another sector with significant growth potential, and one in which we are beginning to export complementary services, such as the production of agricultural machinery," Lopez said.

"We have also identified tourism in several regions of the country, the forestry sector in the Amazon, as well as renewable energy, where major projects are already being developed," he concluded.
