Lima city's revenues for this year are estimated at US$650 million after hosting major events, and 2017 figures are set to exceed US$700 million, Lima Conventions and Visitors Bureau projected.

The Peruvian capital expects to end 2016 recording 620,000 room nights and 25% annual growth, said Bureau President Carlos Canales.

Regarding revenues, Canales estimated Lima will close the year with US$200 million after hosting 90 events accredited by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

"Overall, Lima must garner around US$650 million [considering ICCA and independent events] by the end of 2016."

Last year, Peru's capital generated US$180 million with merely 82 ICCA-approved events.

2017 forecast

On the other hand, total revenues for 2017 are projected at over US$700 million.

Four major meetings have been scheduled to take place in Lima next year, with more than 5,000 attendees each.

One of the grand-scale events is the 130th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session, during which the host for the 2024 Olympic Games will be announced.

The IOC session is expected to gather about 10,000 figures, leading to over US$30 million in room nights.

"Adding all the events, we must reach US$730 million," he estimated.

"Since 80% of attendees are foreigners, we must sell over 700,000 room nights in 4 and 5-star hotels," he revealed.

Lima Convention Center

Canales also highlighted the role of Lima Convention Center in hosting an increasing number of events with a higher number of attendees.
