Lima 2019: Pan American Torch makes stop in Huaraz

12:46 | Huaraz (Ancash region), Jul. 24.

Hundreds of excited locals gathered at the main square of Huaraz, capital of Ancash region, to see the Lima 2019 Pan American Torch relay.

Huaraz was the last stop in the torch's journey outside the Peruvian capital.

Its arrival was scheduled for the afternoon, but the flame approached the Andean city after 7:00 PM.

Children and youth were the most enthusiastic. Twenty two educational institutions participated in pre-arrival activities such as cultural and artistic performances, including traditional dances.

The rejoicing reached its peak when the Lima 2019 torch made its appearance. One after another, athletes carried the iconic symbol of the Games as they were cheered on by a captivated audience.

Cauldron

Ancash-born professional soccer player and torchbearer, Walter Bernuy, lit the cauldron at the city's main square.

Huaraz has thus entered into the spirit of the largest multi-sport event in the Americas: The Pan American Games.
