The National Elections Board (JNE) Honor Tribunal on Tuesday expressed its rejection of violent acts and inappropriate expressions recorded on March 30, during the first event of the second phase of Peru's presidential debate.

Through Exhortation No. 10, the Tribunal reported that it had taken note of various incidents during the event.

These included attacks against Hope Front 2021 party candidate Fernando Olivera Vega by supporters of the Peruvian Aprista Party (APRA), as well as physical assaults against a reporter while performing his duties.

In this regard, the Tribunal emphasized that it "condemns and rejects any type of aggression, violence and/or attacks that undermine a peaceful and democratic electoral environment."

Furthermore, the statement recalled that political organizations bear responsibility for promoting appropriate conduct among their members.

Accordingly, it urged candidates, supporters, and security personnel to maintain proper decorum and respect toward the citizenry.

Remarks questioned

The Honor Tribunal also warned about "unfortunate statements by some presidential candidates," who used inappropriate language and denigrating remarks against their opponents.

In response, it reiterated its call to maintain the level of the debate focused on proposals, avoiding demeaning remarks that affect the quality of the democratic process.

Finally, the body urged all political actors to maintain decorum and integrity during the remaining stages of the presidential debate, avoiding actions that affect the dignity and physical integrity of candidates, journalists, and citizens.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.

This electoral process will allow citizens to go to the polls to elect the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.
