The folkloric dance La Morenada was declared Saturday a Cultural Heritage of the Nation as for being the expression of cultural identity of the district of Santiago León de Chongos Bajo, province of Chupaca, in Peru's central Junin region.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture, the dance reflects the fusion of African and Andean cultures in the country.

The Morenada is most popular during celebrations of Patron Saint Santiago and Virgen del Carmen and features masks depicting the physical features of African people.

The costume includes a black mask, black hat, scarves and feathers of different colors, a white shirt, a multi-colored tie, a jacket, a dark shawl, brown boots and a whip.
